Aug. 11, 2010: Gaines announced his candidacy in the 1st Senate District special primary election on Nov. 2, 2010. The district was previously represented by Sen. Dave Cox who passed away in July.

Jan. 14, 2008: Gaines announced he would not ran in the Republican primary race for the 4th Congressional District, even though the incumbent, John Doolittle, is retiring. Gaines had formed an exploratory committee in 2007. But Gains said he would focus on the state Assembly seat (AD4) he won in 2006. Supporters of Gains had set up a website ( http://www.draftted.com/) to encourage him to run.

Gaines is married to Beth Gaines.
